The style of journalism I will be exploring throughout this industry deep dive is Fashion Editorial style journalism, referring to journalist articles seen in magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, and many others. Findley (2022) states that Fashion Journalism “Includes, but not limited to; reportage and analysis of events, news and products of the fashion industry; whether It’s global brands operating across multiple countries or considering the fashion of a single cultural context.” This sector of the industry has a major influence in various areas of the fashion world, from critiquing a fashion show from a high-end brand to advertising and marketing strategies; all those intertwine when being a fashion journalist.
There are various people within the fashion journalist world that inspire many people, including myself. Some of those individuals include Anna Wintour (American Vogue), Alexandra Shulman (British Vogue), Glenda Bailey (Harper’s), Suzy Menkes (Vogue International), and Carine Riotfeld (French Fashion Editor). These are just to name a few who have strong names within the industry, mainly internationally.
So that begs the question, why is fashion journalism important for the industry? For starters, it brings a sense of identity to these brands, allowing them to be exposed to a wider audience through the use of text and visuals to coexist with these articles. This creates a voice for these journalists, not only to praise and market for brands and individuals, it also allows them to critique and give negative feedback which, in turn, would help improve problems within a new collection from a brand, for instance.
